Accounting Heart Turns 5!

30 May 2021 marks Accounting Heart’s fifth birthday Woo hoo! Have we achieved everything we wanted to achieve? No. Have we achieved things that we never thought were possible? Yes! Are we proud of what we have achieved? ABSOLUTELY.

Accounting Heart was started out of the frustration I was feeling working in masculine work environments where the needs of female team members and clients weren’t a consideration. The people responsible for the culture of those work environments didn’t understand that people working in those environments and the people that they served are made of flesh and blood, have feelings and emotions and aspirations that extend beyond work and company profits. December 2015 became the point in time that I knew that to find the workplace culture that I dreamed of, I was going to have to create it myself and just like that Accounting Heart was conceived.

Being interviewed for a podcast recently I was asked what I was most proud of achieving and I thought our fifth birthday was the time for celebrating and sharing some of our highlights with you. So what are some of those highlights?

  • Making it beyond three years in business. Did you know that 60% of Australian businesses don’t make it past year three?

  • Employing three wonderful women who make up the Accounting Heart team. It is incredibly satisfying to know that the business you created is providing meaningful work to others and making a difference in their lives through flexibility, remote working and hopefully what they see as a great workplace culture.

  • Having the foresight to create a business that is paperless, 100% cloud based with an app stack that allows for seamless workflows. This business was set up this way so that I could work from anywhere in the world, however the real benefit was when COVID hit. It was just one $30 cable and the whole team was up and running from home.

  • Working with our beautiful clients and making a difference as they start up, grow or wind down. Our blog contains a number of case studies on some of the different ways we have helped.

  • Staying true to building a business based on values and empathy.

Those are the highlights that lead me winning the 2020 Women in Finance Award for Accountant of the Year. Just over four years into Accounting Heart, I had national industry recognition that my heart-centred approach to accounting and business may be the way of the future. The cherry on top in 2020 was winning a silver Stevie for Woman of the Year - Business Services, an international award. Accounting Heart is being noticed and making a mark.

As a result of winning these awards other opportunities have arisen, namely:

  • Personal features in Authority Magazine and The Leadership Review, where I shared my story.

  • Chartered Accountants Australian & New Zealand’s magazine, Acuity reaching out to me for my opinion on the restrictions on accountants providing investment advice for their article Investment advice: What can’t you say?

  • Invitation to speak at The Advisor’s Better Business Summit in June to share my insights into who is buying property and how to maximise referral relationships.

  • Content being regularly published in Kochie’s Business Builders, Inside Small Business and Flying Solo, among others. Head to the media page on our website for links to all of our published content.

  • Invitations to speak and share my story on various podcasts. Again our media page on our website contains the links to these podcasts.

This coverage has extended Accounting Heart’s reach well beyond our Miranda office. I would like to think that by sharing my story, creating content and providing accounting services that extend beyond just the numbers, that I can encourage other women to start and build their own profitable businesses and to be the change that they want to see in the workplaces across Australia.

There’s been no one particular highlight. Each highlight has played an important part or stepping stone to reaching the next. While I have been the driving force of Accounting Heart, I haven’t done it alone. There have been so many people that have helped me along the way, thank you everyone. Here’s to the next five years!.
